Perm Zoo turns 80!

Perm Zoo is turning 80 on August 1, as stated by City Department of Culture and Youth Policy.

A celebration event called “80 years together with the Zoo” took place on August 3.  More than 7 thousand people attended children activities and family competitions on the anniversary day at the zoo: 2,5 thousand kids and more than 4 thousand adults.

“Buranovskie Babushki” ensemble came over to compliment Perm Zoo.  Eurovision finalists promised to visit Perm next time when the new zoo is opened.

Some of the inhabitants also prepared a present for the day. Himalayan Tahr gave birth to a baby on July 29 – the second one for July.

“Perm Zoo is renowned outside Russia – said zoo director Lydmila Kardashova, - We have connections with Czech and German zoos. Some animals are going to travel to other countries soon”.

 

Information:

Perm Zoo is a unique cultural, educational, scientific and environmental center. It leads its history from a small animal room, opened in 1922 at the Museum of Local Lore. It became separate organization on August 1, 1933.  In 1995 it became one of the first Russian members of Eurasian Regional Association for Zoos and Aquariums. 

300 thousand people visit Perm Zoo annually. It unites Perm residents in environmental activities and initiates regional ecological actions, such as “The bird of the year”, “Feed the birds”, “Day of a crane”, and arranges charitable events.

Perm Zoo achieved some great results in breeding endangered species, such as polar bear, snow leopard, Siberian tiger, markhor, and takes part in international programs on preserving rare and endangered species.
